Cycling Tours in the Nature

Italy is made to be discovered slowly, and nothing brings you closer to its landscapes than traveling by bike. Our cycling tours in nature in Italy take you across rolling hills, river valleys, vineyard roads, alpine paths and coastal scenery, far from traffic and close to the true rhythm of the land. Each route is built around beautiful natural settings, where every day offers open views, fresh air and a deep sense of place.

Along the way you’ll pass through medieval villages, historic towns and rural areas where traditions are still alive. Quiet country roads, local food, regional wines and genuine hospitality turn every ride into a complete travel experience, not just a cycling trip. These tours are ideal for riders who enjoy nature, culture and discovery in equal measure.

From gentle countryside stages to more varied terrain with rewarding climbs and panoramas, you can choose the journey that best fits your style and enjoy Italy one landscape at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before choosing your Italy cycling tour

What kind of natural landscapes will I cycle through?

Italy's natural variety is unmatched in Europe, and our nature-themed tours reflect that. Depending on the route you choose, you can expect:

  • Alpine terrain: Dolomite peaks, glacial lakes, and mountain meadows on tours like the Sentiero Valtellina or the Cortina to Bressanone route

  • Rolling countryside: Tuscan hills, Umbrian valleys, and the vine-covered slopes of Piedmont's Barolo wine country

  • Coastal scenery: The rugged Costa Verde in Sardinia, the Tyrrhenian coastline in southern Tuscany, and the crystal-clear waters of Puglia

  • River valleys and wetlands: The Po Delta, the Adige valley, and the canal network around Comacchio

Each itinerary is built around quiet country roads and dedicated cycle paths, keeping you away from traffic and close to the landscape.

Our nature tours span all five difficulty levels, from gentle countryside rides to more demanding mountain routes. Most tours in this category fall in the Level 1 to Level 3 range, meaning they are accessible to recreational cyclists who ride occasionally.

A useful benchmark: If you can comfortably cycle 30 to 60 km on a flat to gently rolling road, you will manage the majority of our nature tours without difficulty. Tours with significant elevation gain (such as the Dolomites routes) are clearly marked at Level 3 or above.

If you are unsure which level suits you, contact our team and we'll match you to the right tour based on your experience.

  • Spring (Apr–Jun): Mild temperatures, wildflowers in bloom, and low crowds. Best for Tuscany, Umbria, Piedmont, and Puglia.

  • Summer (Jul–Aug): Warm to hot in the south; ideal for northern routes and high-altitude riding in the Dolomites and Alpine areas.

  • Autumn (Sep–Oct): Harvest season, golden landscapes, and excellent food and wine. Best for the Barolo hills, Val d'Orcia, and Veneto.

  • Winter (Nov–Mar): Suitable only for southern regions such as Sicily, Sardinia, and Puglia.

Spring and autumn are generally the best seasons for most nature tours. The light is beautiful, the roads are quiet, and the landscapes are at their most vivid.

We provide a range of rental bikes suited to each terrain:

  • Comfort road bikes for most countryside and coastal tours

  • E-bikes available on request for riders who want assistance on climbs

  • Gravel bikes for routes with unpaved tracks, such as the Val d'Orcia Strade Bianche tour

You are also welcome to bring your own bike. Our team will advise on the best bike type when you book.

Yes. On all our self-guided tours, luggage is transferred between accommodations each day so you only carry a small daypack on the bike. On guided group tours, the support vehicle handles luggage and can assist riders who need a rest or encounter a mechanical issue.

Absolutely. Most of our nature tours naturally weave in medieval villages, historic towns, local wineries, and traditional restaurants along the route. Italy does not separate its landscapes from its culture; a ride through the Barolo hills includes vineyard visits, and a tour through Umbria passes through towns like Assisi and Spello. You can also filter tours by multiple themes, such as Nature + Gastronomy or Nature + Culture, to find itineraries that balance outdoor cycling with richer cultural stops.

  • Linear trips take you from point A to point B, covering new ground every day. Ideal if you want to see as much of the country as possible and do not mind different start and end points.

  • Roundtrips begin and end in the same location, making logistics simpler, especially for families or groups sharing a single car or transfer.

Both formats are available across our nature tour collection, with durations ranging from 4 to 24 days.

Inclusions vary by tour, but a standard nature cycling holiday with Italian Bike Tours typically covers:

  • Accommodation (usually in family-run agriturismos, country hotels, or boutique properties)

  • Daily breakfast and, on many tours, dinner

  • Luggage transfers between each stop

  • Detailed route maps and GPS tracks

  • Rental bike (where selected)

  • 24/7 support from our local team

A full breakdown of what is included is listed on each individual tour page. If you have specific requirements, contact our team before booking.
