Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before choosing your Italy cycling tour

What fitness level do I need for a mountain cycling tour in Italy?

Our mountain tours are designed for cyclists with a solid base of fitness, but you do not need to be a competitive rider. Most tours are graded Comfort level, meaning routes follow paved roads and dedicated cycling paths with manageable elevation gain spread across multiple days. That said, mountain terrain does involve climbs, so riders who cycle regularly (at least 2-3 times per week) and are comfortable in the saddle for 4-6 hours will get the most enjoyment out of the experience.

If you are unsure about your level, our team is happy to help you match the right tour to your ability before you book.

Our mountain cycling collection spans Italy's most dramatic highland landscapes:

  • The Alps and Dolomites (Alto Adige, Trentino, Valtellina) featuring iconic routes like the Cortina to Bressanone descent and the Sentiero Valtellina

  • Piedmont (Ivrea, Biella, the Zegna panoramic route) combining alpine scenery with industrial heritage and vineyard hills

  • The Apennines via the Via Francigena pilgrimage route, crossing from Parma through Tuscany to Siena and beyond

Each region offers a distinct character, from the rugged Dolomite peaks and traditional South Tyrolean villages to Piedmont's fairytale castles and Tuscany's cypress-lined ridgelines.

Best season: May through October, with June, July, and September being the sweet spot for most mountain routes.

  • May and June: Fresh alpine scenery, wildflowers in bloom, fewer crowds, and comfortable temperatures at altitude

  • July and August: Peak summer warmth; higher passes are fully accessible but popular tourist areas can be busy

  • September and October: Arguably the finest conditions, with cooler riding temperatures, autumn foliage, and harvest season in wine-producing mountain valleys

Winter months (November through April) are generally not suitable for most mountain routes due to snow, closed passes, and limited accommodation availability.

Yes. E-bikes are available as an upgrade on all of our mountain tours and are a popular choice for riders who want to enjoy the mountain scenery without the full physical demand of every climb. E-bikes are especially well suited to routes in the Dolomites and the Alps, where elevation gain can be significant. Please mention your interest in an e-bike when enquiring and we will confirm availability for your chosen tour.

All Italian Bike Tours mountain packages are fully supported and include:

  • Accommodation: Carefully selected hotels and guesthouses along the route

  • Luggage transfer: Your bags are transported between stops each day

  • Route documentation: Detailed maps, GPS tracks, and daily briefings

  • Local support: On-call assistance throughout the tour

  • Rental bike (optional): Available as an add-on if you are not bringing your own

Flights, travel insurance, and most meals are not included in the base price unless stated in the specific tour description.

The right tour depends on three things: your fitness level, the type of scenery you want, and how many days you have available.

Tour lengths range from 5 days (such as the Via Francigena from Aosta to Ivrea) to 24 days (the full Via Francigena from Aosta to Rome). Most mountain tours run between 6 and 9 days, with 3 to 7 active cycling days depending on the itinerary. This structure gives you a genuine mountain experience without rushing, with rest days or shorter transfer days built in where the terrain demands it.
