Bike Tour: Ancient Via Amerina - Orte to Rome - 5 days

The ancient Via Amerina runs through historic and representative places in upper Lazio.

This five-day itinerary starts in Civita Castellana and passes through unique villages and unspoilt forests, hiding necropolis and mysterious ruins until it reaches Rome, the Eternal City.
The unique characteristics of this ancient road, which proceeds between bridges and cuts, make it one of the first important architectures of Roman expansionism.

Today, it is one of the best preserved roads in southern Etruria.

The Via Amerina was built in the 4th century BC, during Roman expansionism. The Romans built this road detached from the main Faliscan settlements, to exclude them and prevent new revolts. At the same time, they built the city of Falerii Novi, to which the Falisci were transferred. Here we tell you about the Necropolis of Cavo degli Zucchi, the largest existing Faliscan necropolis. A suggestive place, full of fascination and mystery.

As you will discover by opening the pages of the individual stages, the Via Amerina is a treasure trove of priceless archaeological treasures. There are numerous Falisca tombs, rupestrian settlements, hollow ways, towers, castles, medieval centres and prehistoric caves, as well as naturalistic views of gorges and lush vegetation.

A charming loop itinerary immersed in the hazelnut and chestnut groves cultivated at the foot of the Cimini Mountains. It starts in Corchiano and winds its way through the wonderful Agro Falisco area, crossing the archaeological and naturalistic jewels of this splendid territory. It continues on to the village of Vignanello, where it is worth visiting the Ruspoli Castle with its splendid Italian garden. Continuing towards Orte, from the Bagnolo plateau, you will enjoy a unique panorama of the Tiber valley. Crossing the path of the Sanctuary of San Bernardino, you can admire the Borgo di Orte from an unusual perspective. Leaving the ancient village head towards Vasanello and you will be travelling along the Antica Via Amerina and not to be missed, the WWF Oasis. Just a few more kilometres of dirt and secondary roads will bring the loop to a close as you reach the starting point.

Challenge: 65km, ascent 338m, descent 53m

Day 3:    Ride from Civita Castellana – Castel Sant’Elia - Nepi to Formello, 40km
After breakfast, today's first tapa is Civita Castellana, an enchanting village, where you will visit the Forte Sangallo and the Duomo dei Cosmati.

Leaving Civita behind, you will cycle towards Castel Sant’Elia, a town rich in sanctuaries and archaeological sites, to enter the historic village of Nepi.

From Nepi, continue towards Campagnano di Roma and from here the ancient Via Amerina rejoins the Via Francigena. Today's stage ends in Formello among its medieval palaces.

Day 4:    Ride Formello to Rome

The stage continues through the Lazio countryside, in a scenery so peaceful that you would never guess you are so close to the metropolis. You will have to overcome a short stretch of roads a little busier than usual, before reaching the Tiber River cycle path, a wonderful route that will take you to the gates of Vatican City, where you will end your journey in St Peter's Square.

Don't forget a triumphant photo in front of the Basilica, before celebrating the end of the trip by feasting on abbacchio, pecorino romano, and maybe a nice maritozzo con panna... you've earned it!
