Bike Tour: Sardinia: Along the Costa Verde - 6 days

When you first got here, in the region of Sardinia called Sulcis-Iglesiente you immediately feel why it is also known as Costa Verde-The Green Coast-: this place is remote, wild and has an industrial- mines past that forged the landscape and the people. This past of mineral extraction (started 8.000 years ago) creates a unique combination of abandoned mine sites together with the natural beauty of the area and stimulates the curiosity of whom come to this area for the first time, that feeling of “here there’s a story to be told”.

Day 1: Arrival in Sant'Antioco
Day 2: Sant’Antioco Island loop ride
Day 3: Ride Sant'Antioco to Porto Pino
Day 4: Ride from Porto Pino to Teulada
Day 5: Ride from Teulada to Pula
Day 6: Arrivederci Sardinia!

Day 1:    Arrival in Sant'Antioco

Your trip starts in Sant’Antioco Island, home of some excellent wines (Carignano del Sulcis). 

  

Day 2:    Sant’Antioco Island loop ride
50 km

Today is full of options: it’s possible to ride your bike all around the  island,  stopping  by  various  inlet  for  pic-nic,  take  a  fishing boat  excursion  or  have  a  horseback  ride,  or  just  relax  at  the beach.

Challenge: 42 km, 480 m ascent, 460 m descent

Day 3:    Ride Sant'Antioco to Porto Pino

Today's ride pass through the almost abandoned (since the artificial basin on Monte Pranu lake was builded in 1951) village of Tratalias and ends in Porto Pino, with its famous beaches; the ride is along beautiful roads and gravel tracks passing by wineries and vineyards of the famous Carignano del Sulcis red wine! Once you arrive in Porto Pino you can continue exploring the area's numerous bike trails or go and try some water sports at the beach.

Challenge: 35 km, 220 m ascent, 225 m descent 

Day 4:    Ride from Porto Pino to Teulada

This morning your first stop is the village of Tratalias, with its romanic church dedicated to S. Maria di Montserrat; after a stop at the village of Santadi (home of a famous winery) you pass by the stunning  caves Is Zuddas, worth a visit! A nice ride along a quiet road leads you to Teulada, last stop of today, famous for terracotta pipes and highly refined embroidery.

Challenge: 35 km, 210 m ascent, 310 m descent

Day 5:    Ride from Teulada to Pula

The  last  day  is  a  must  for  cyclists!  The  Costa  del  Sud  is  an incessant  repetition  of  ups  and  downs  with breath-taking  views of the coast and the sea, watchtowers and beautiful inlets; there are  multiple  occasions  to  stop  and  swim  in  the  crystal-clear water! The last stop is Pula; just a couple of km out of town you can  visit  the  archeological  site  of  Nora,  an  important  Fenician port  where  it  is  possible  to  admire  some  very  well  preserved Roman mosaics.

Challenge: 50 km, 625 m ascent, 675 m descent

Day 6:    Arrivederci Sardinia!
